Obtained Abitur (higher-education entrance qualification) in 1972. Studied German and social science from 1972 to 1978; passed first and second state examinations to qualify as a teacher in 1978 and 1980 respectively.

Taught at academic secondary schools from 1981 to 1995.

Member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) since 1976; chairman of the Groß-Gerau subdistrict branch of the JUSO (youth section of the SPD) from 1980 to 1981; member of the executive committee of the Groß-Gerau subdistrict branch of the SPD from 1984 to 2014; member of the Land Parliament of Hesse from 1995 to 2002; member of the executive committee of the Hesse-South district branch 1998-1999 and 2011-2015; member of Groß-Gerau county council from 1998 to 2010; member . Member of Groß-Gerau county council from 1998 to 2010; member of the German Bundestag from 2002 to 2017 (Member of the Committee on Internal Affairs; Member and substitute chairman of the Committee Digital Agenda; Substitute Member of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid).

Member of the advisory board of the foundation for data protection from 2014-2017; Member of the Federal Agency for Technical Disaster Relief (THW) since 1976; president of the Hesse branch of the association since 1998; member of the Building, Agricultural and Environmental Workers’ Union (IG Bau); member of the German Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) and D64 – Centre for digital progress.
